Self Defense: Fists, Clubs, Knives, Guns

No link needed here. I suggest that most of what you use your hand for are grabbing things to use as weapons unless you are well trained in martial arts. I'd still take a cane, chair, or metal object as a tool for defense before I'd rely on my empty hands.

Any strong stick or object can serve as a weapon and can be almost the equal in terms of danger to a knife, though not quite since a knife is lethal and most canes take multiple strikes to achieve that. As for defending against an attack the good thing about a club is that it can help maintain distance.

This reminds me of the risk now almost twenty years ago when people started receiving white powder in the mail. I hated even going into the post office at the time and I could see the postal workers were scared. What this shows among everything else is that our life is fragile and can be disrupted by events out of our control and often caused by one deranged person.
Back when the Beltway shooters were running around the D.C. region and shooting people randomly we all ducked our heads whenever pumping gas and looked around for white trucks. It turns out that the actual shooters were driving a sedan so all the hysteria was focused in the wrong direction.
Answer to all of this. Enjoy each day and be thankful when it is peaceful and pleasant.

Today I bought some socks at Wally World and took the effort not to send money to a most likely future enemy, China. There were options from China, Honduras, and El Salvador. The socks from El Salvador were also an American company so at least a portion of the profits came home and those going to El Salvador in the form of wages at least support jobs that might keep that country afloat and thus draw fewer of them into our country illegally. Win Win
When you are buying things consider to whom the money goes. Think about how you might someday regret sending resources to a rival and soon to be enemy.
Right now I don't think I want to send money to China, Russia, and most places in the Middle East. On that basis I suggest you look a the food you buy now too. I simply won't buy food sourced in China for a number of reasons mostly due to safety but now for funding the military buildup they are doing to challenge the U.S. In a local food store here I noticed that almost all of the bulk frozen fish packs have China as a source. Sorry, not gonna do it. I found the Gortons brand that seems to be U.S. sourced. Also for Sardines I'd rather send the money to Portugal or Morocco than the Chicoms again.

Here is a college educated writer now living in a shelter and spending his days in the library. I often thought that I'd rather live in a cabin in the woods like Thoreau with no electric and wood for heat, water in a ditch or from rainfall, and healthcare of the same kind in his day, meaning none but a local doctor. Anything really bad coming your way in the form of health problems meant you were just out of luck.
Food, grow what you can and buy the rest with your meager social security check. That is better than Thoreau had. How long would you live. It all depends but even if you're gone by 70 just remember that for most the last ten years is a struggle anyway. So making it to 80 or 90 is no joy no matter who you are and how much money you have.

I tend to agree with the idea that having a universal motion useful for any gun is ideal for readiness in a combat situation. It is simply too hard to train across a wide selection of guns so unless you limit yourself to one and only one type this might be the answer.

I think that the idea of reset is great for the range but not ideal for most combat situations where stress can remove even elemental control of body movements.
Have you experienced a short stroke before on a semi-auto pistol? This is where you didn't let the trigger out far enough and the trigger doesn't reset. Short stroking a revolver will simply mean you won't be able to use the gun until you get the cylinder to align with the barrel. A full stroke and release is necessary.
I have and it was a direct result of training on a Glock for reset and then using a Kahr CW9 the next day. If you've used a Kahr you know that they have a very long pull and reset so unless you slap the trigger guard like you would on a revolver then you're asking for a failure.
Final Analysis: Use the reset for the range for accurate target shooting if you must and keep your combat training skills geared toward switching between various types of handguns such as revolvers, striker fired, DA and SA guns.
A short stroke can be fatal if the first shot doesn't end the fight so I would call it a do and die situation where riding the reset can be a final mistake.
A gunfight that requires a continuous flow of follow up shots sounds like a tough scene that most will never experience unless they are police or military. Training for a self defense situation every round you send downrange is a legal decision so that riding the reset may actually be a recipe for what is now often seen as overkill when facing a jury and you sent a hail of rounds into an aggressor.

Survival Rifle: AR-7 Henry - Reviews

I haven't tried the Henry and I'm sure it's top quality like the rest of their products. The real question should be whether it fits into your self defense and survival profile. As a hunting and survival tool there are many effective options so you have to decide what fills your needs. If you're often driving or hiking into the far reaches of the woods then maybe this has a place.
The old AR-7 models had magazine feeding issues and honesty didn't seem any better to me than a good bull barrel Ruger MK series pistol when it came to distance shooting. Now with so many good conversion kits for weapons like the Glock, CZ-75, Sig, and 1911 I don't see the point of going this route. If you want a state of the art folding .22 rifle with accuracy and great magazine and parts availability I'd go with the Ruger 10/22 Convertible. If you want full compatibility with your magazines and don't mind the ammo cost I'd get a Kel-Tec carbine in 9mm or .40 in a version that matches your Glock or Beretta for magazines. The range on the 9mm matches the .22 and the energy delivered is more than double. Plus you can still have a .22 pistol with a conversion kit.

Of course we all would be upset if the gravy train of the federal trough meant less for us. But most federal employees are well compensated and unlike back in the 1970's and earlier when you were told that the security of the job justified less compensation than the private sector, now the federal employees are paid much more and their retirement plans are of course based on this excessive pay level. Add to that health care beyond what most in the private sector can expect and you have a special class of people who are held above the rest of us that are actually paying for this largesse.
The rest of us are left to fend for ourselves. Re-align federal pay with the private sector or better yet, cut it to 20% below it.
Of course we all would be upset if the gravy train of the federal trough meant less for us. But most federal employees are well compensated and unlike back in the 1970's and earlier when you were told that the security of the job justified less compensation than the private sector, now the federal employees are paid much more and their retirement plans are of course based on this excessive pay level. Let me add one that I think exists. Living to carry versus carrying to live.
I found that the weapons setup with the least effort, ease of use, and lightest is the one I will carry with me at all times. Whether this is a .22 revolver or a 9mm single stack doesn't matter so much as the fact that I have something that can issue resistance to attack whether firing it or not. Find a gun you can carry and hit with and ignore the guys behind the gun counter telling you have to get at least a 9mm and should go with a .45. For myself, I'm partial to .380 in various configurations because I find myself carrying it regularly long after I set aside the Glock 19, and any 1911 versions. If you like single action the Sig P238 is a gem, and if you like striker fire the Glock 42 is ideal. When I say ideal I mean minimal recoil, reduced report to help save hearing destruction relative to say a .40 if you are forced to use it without hearing protection. Both are light in weight and slim in form. There are others but these two I know about. If you want a revolver there is always the option of sizing down to a .22 magnum S&W model 317 or a Ruger LCR in .38 or .22 Magnum or .22 LR. Of course .38 is preferred but I would put my hands up were a .22 Magnum or LR facing me and I was caught by surprise. Anyone who says different must not know how much a .22 hole hurts when it goes 12 inches into your body. Okay, so maybe it won't lay someone out instantly like some of the hotter rounds but I accept that the fight has just begun and maybe the shooting part isn't the end of it. Running comes to mind along with grabbing the nearest chair once you've emptied on the bad guy. Sure, things might not work out but To quote Sergeant Major Daniel Daly, "Do you want to live forever?"
