Read the series starting with "One Second After."  You'll have a taste of what could be our fate thanks to the ignorance, duplicity, and incompetence of our congressional leaders over the decades.  The threat of an electromagnetic pulse has been known since atmospheric atomic tests were done in the 1950's and 60's.   The outcome is bleak without proper shielding and preparation for a society so dependent on the electrical grid and electronics in general.

What can you do to protect yourself?

Food, Water, Shelter, liquid and solid fuels for heat and cooking.   You might lay away some solar power capability in a sheltered environment so that it can survive and EMP attack.  If it survives you might have the means to sustain at least some level of existence as the mass die offs occur.  Still, life here could go back to the early 1900's in a day. 

Oh, add some means for self defense and protection of your preparations.
