I have never tried this exact approach.  Mostly what I suggest is to put on boots or shoes you are willing to spray with Deet or treat with tick killer meant to treat clothing. 

Wear White

White clothes show up ticks quickly.

Tuck Clothes

Tuck your pants into your white socks and spray deet on the socks and the overlap.  This may not prevent a tick from crawling on you but it confuses their scent glands.

Treat the Area

Spray various insecticides if you really want to cut down the tick population, just keep the grass cut so low that it makes it hard for them to exist.  They like shade and don't like hot dry areas like an open sunlit lawn.
