I suppose the European Allies in Europe should remind themselves which country started two world wars with their aggression and desire to lead the world. It wasn't the USA or Britain. An encounter with a late night intruder
I came across this page in my travels on the web and found it excellent as a reminder to be sure of your situation before pulling the trigger. It may save a life, your freedom, and your assets.
A locked door is a really good idea as the man in this story admitted he hadn't locked the door. I guess I live in an alternate universe. I've believed in locked doors since I was a kid. There is something about waking up staring at an axe handle that just creeps me out. An alarm or a dog is also a nice touch.

1. Water bottle or water container made of metal - good club for one strike.
2. Book - and old hard cover or even a paperback. Snap it on edge for a strike.
3. Baseball cap - snap from the bill to the plastic back in the face and eyes of opponent. Good for wrist flick surprise

Nixon committed many fewer crimes and was forced out of office. Illegal spying is just a small part of the long list of governmental abuses perpetrated by the Obama administration. Nothing was ever done to bring anyone to some even minor form of justice. No one was fired, lost their pension, or of course no one went to jail for things like the IRS abuse against the Tea Party. When you see the train of abuses that went unchecked and even today no one is held accountable you know that we have become much less free and much more of a centralized totalitarian government with no checks and balances.
Now, when you have a president that attempts to correct course on many of these flagrant abuses of power his whole administration is attacked by the establishment.
What does this mean for you personally. If you think that your freedoms remain what they were before 2001 and the Patriot act you are mistaken. Few things are the same and never will be again. Keep in mind that the one thing you want to do is stay out of the justice system by getting in some form of legal entanglement of a criminal nature. Live your life that way so that you can own firearms and live ostensibly free. Find your freedom and peace of mind by disconnecting yourself from the power of the state as much as possible.

Water: Start saving your water bottles and fill them up out of the tap. Buy gallon bottles of water with the more durable plastic type with resealable lids. Use the water if you want but be sure to partially refill them and also put them in outside storage. Save more water than you imagine you'll need a a month or three.
Shelter: a stand alone home is best simply to limit risk to fires as inhabitants of multi unit structures do whatever they have to in order to keep warm and cook food. Fire will be the enemy along with sanitation.
Food: You can never have enough but at least set aside a three month supply to give you some breathing space during the crash of an EMP event.
Energy: Batteries and basic flashlights, Oil lamps and lamp oil, propane stove and propane, woodstoves and wood, oh and if you plan to use any electronics it should be sealed in a Faraday level EMP shielded container. I'd set aside some LED lighting in EMP proof storage since even those have plenty of electronic circuits and the same with small solar chargers.
Ammo: no worries here. Ammo is EMP proof as far as we know. Load up.

Consider The Ammunition First
I'd consider four types if you want to limit your purchasing. You can buy the weapons that fill out this list.
Four Rounds to Consider: .22, 9mm, 5.56, 12 or 20 Gauge.
.22 in rifle and pisol
9mm in pistol and carbine/rifle
5.56 in the obvious weapon, an AR-15 style weapon.
12 or 20 gauge in a pump shotgun

If I could only buy one weapon based on one caliber I'd go for a 9mm premium quality pistol.
Reasoning:
I would consider going with 9mm just to have a relatively low cost practice round that can fill all the categories you need if you find yourself limited by finances and need to stick to one caliber and two weapons, a handgun and a rifle. You could get a 9mm carbine as the follow up weapon and stay with those two and only be limited to range Sure, it's not for hunting or long range shooting but within the boundaries of self defense it is a great choice. You can load up on that round in FMJ for practice and JHP for actual use.

If you want a gun recommendation try the Glock 19, the most popular of the Glock line and probably one of the most popular 9mm pistols ever built. You can buy a used one and still rely on it. I've purchased numerous used Glock pistols over the years and never had a bad one. Of course, you can always just spend the extra dollars for a new one.
Work on your handgun skills. You can always practice your rifle skills with a pellet rifle. That might be the cheapest way to improve your long gun skills until you choose to pony up for the bucks to get the rifle, buy the ammo, and find a range to go to in order to practice it.
Carbine/Rifle Choice
The Kel-Tec Sub2000 is a great short range carbine with the added advantage that the price is around $400 and if you can buy one that uses the same Glock 9mm magazines that fit your pistol. One thing to note is that you need the Glock 17 magazines and not the shorter 9mm Glock 19 magazine that holds 15 rounds. Other than that you have successfully avoided a cost and logistics issue by having two weapon types that use the same Glock magazine.
Your other options are the Beretta CX4 carbine at more than $750 or Hi-Point 995 carbine. The Hi-Point is a very robust weapon and is reliable though heavy and less than $350 though the magazines aren't interchangeable with the Glock and are standard 10 rounds, though higher capacity versions may become available.

The maximum effective range on a 9mm as an antipersonnel round is close to 150 yards though many would say 100 yards. You'll have close to 200 ft lbs of energy left at 150 yards with a bullet drop of close to 3 feet. It is workable for close range small game but your main concern is self defense and anti-personnel. Sure you won't outdistance a 5.56 or greater but your protection zone within 100 yards is solved. Anything beyond that is realistically something you won't face in most instances and especially until the SHTF.

As a final aside I'd like to know if the woman who was attacked felt safe because she was a left wing adherent and thought that was protection, or maybe she just had no situational awareness or both. Buying seeds at the store seem to be an inexpensive way to create a back-up food supply. But keep in mind that unless you plan to use these seeds relatively soon the viability of those seeds could come into question.
Here is one strategy you might take starting now to have a guaranteed supply of heirloom seeds that will outlast your need should a long term emergency arise.

I used to get a laugh when listening to radio Bulgaria over the shortwave as a teenager as it seemed they started a new five year food production plan every year. I'm still not sure. I suppose they failed to meet goals every year so they restarted another plan. It was a joke.

A simple method to also guarantee that you aren't wasting your money is to buy a seed vault, open it, use it, but not all of it. Use it over a five year period and see how it produces. If you like what you find go ahead and get another container. In the meantime, you can always ramp up your seed supply by purchasing heirloom seeds at the store or online.

How about investing the cost of a sealed survival seed container once per year for the next five years and hope of course that we aren't hit with a big time SHTF event during that period that stops the music. By doing this you will also find out the viability and how vigorous the plants are they produce. Weakened seeds for whatever reason may produce sickly plants that aren't strong enough to produce food as needed.
Here is a good article on seed storage but it doesn't really focus on long term sealed seed products but instead shows you the method for standard seed storage which is the ideal way to augment your high end heirloom purchase plan. 8 seeds you can store at least five years.
Whatever you do, make sure that you are in the business of growing some of your own food now rather than just having a seed storage collection with no food production experience. It could mean the difference between freedom and the FEMA camp, and survival or starvation. It's your call.
