It sounds like a Satellite was taken out in space.  We may not hear about it but likely an old one was used for practice or the enemies of the West are practicing on ours.

Just be aware there is almost nothing you can do to avoid these risks so don't worry about them.  The risk you can manage is going into dangerous cities or living near one.
