The AR Platform

The AR is the standard answer to the standard question.  What do you carry that is light and reliable within the boundaries of what constitutes reliability that will do the job.

Weight - The number one rule of infantry or anyone who has to carry their combat load is weight.  The .556 and the AR win in this category.

Parts Availability - in the USA this isn't even arguable.  The AR platform is the Chevy of semi-auto rifles.

Ammo Resupply - in the USA this again isn't arguable.   You can find .556/.223 in sporting goods stores, gun shops, gun shows, and online.  You'll also find it at many department stores and some gas stations depending on the locality.  It is for the time being readily available.

Reliability - keep your weapon clean, carry an extra bolt assembly,  and you'll find your weapon will work in most conditions.

One proviso - quality matters.
