This is why you should carry a weapon if you can do so legally.  Dogs cannot be reasoned with any more than a predatory human.  At least with a predator biped you can make them reconsider their aggression by showing resistance in the form of words, physical actions like grabbing a weapon, or actually displaying one.  Then of course finally using a firearm to stop an attack.
