FBI says 9mm
Admittedly this is a two year old article but the wheels of government move slowly. If you notice, now the gun press has moved back to the 9mm as a good round for self defense, though not all them. Many writers who wouldn't have considered the 9mm up to the task now feel that with the momentum moving again toward less is more theory notice what some of us knew all along. Simply, that 9mm allows more rounds in the magazine, punches a hole much like the vaunted .40 an .45 especially when expanding, and is much cheaper to use for practice. Also, the price and selection of weapons in 9mm outnumbers all the others. It is ubiquitous. The funny thing is that even the .380 is getting some good press now though it's not my first choice for carry it does fill the need for weight and size when clothing limitations exist for concealed carry due usually to summer months. It also has a superb reduction in recoil yet still punches a hole like the .38 or 9mm, but not as deep with the same expansion. For that matter, I'm not against a .22 revolver versus carrying nothing. Often just the presence of a gun will inhibit action from the aggressors and you can't defend against everything.
Just like the diet guidelines have changed every decade or so, the caliber guidelines for self defense and law enforcement handguns is changing again.
9mm vs .40 S&W
.38 Special - it was the standard for almost a century. The limitation is lack of firepower/capacity versus the civilian options after 9mm semi-auto pistols become common in various sizes.
9mm - This is the same diameter as the .38 special but it has less
lead in the bullet but increased velocity making for more energy
overall. It is configured to stack in magazines and feed in a semi-auto
pistol. Limited defensive loads prior to the 1990's and other perceived deficiencies came to the front after the Miami shootout. They probably should have considered that rifles tend to beat handguns every time and armed FBI agents with carbines or shotguns in their vehicles in addition to sidearms. Bureaucrats never see the obvious. Good ammo might have made the difference as well. The final item might have been to train them to fight injured since that seemed to be the final issue that caused the loss of the fight.
10mm - So then they picked the big boy gun but had trouble with control. It had a strong recoil that some shooters couldn't manage well. Concealment was probably an issue as well.
.40 S&W - This should have been the ideal compromise except for female recruits it was still too much to handle. Some men found it a problem as well.
9mm - Back to the past. With improvements in defensive ammo it may end up being the ideal compromise to include trainees having an easy time with it. +P and hotter ammo makes it closer to the .40S&W.
What Next?
5.7mm - Were it not for the size of the gun it has even better numbers all the way around. Capacity 20-30 rounds. Recoil is nil. Accuracy is excellent. Energy is high and penetration is sufficient. Weight is low. Cost per round is no higher than .45.

Survival Eating: The Salt Mine and Galley Slave Diet
I had this idea that somehow the slaves in these two jobs probably
got a miserable bowl of gruel once a day. How long they lived I can't
know, but I presume they kept them going with just enough to make them
work. It's amazing what the human body can withstand when required. The only immediate needs is air. Next comes the body temperature. Somehow and someway you need to keep warm enough not to lose core temperatures. Finally comes water. You need enough water to keep the system cooled and to keep circulation going just like a car needs water in the radiator.
After all that, if you have enough fuel in the tank to at least slow starvation you can keep going though admittedly hunger has a way of simultaneously sharpening and dulling the mind. The sharpening relates to seeing the absolute need to get fuel in the form of calories. The dulling part comes from a low energy setting on the brain that allows you to focus on one thing like staying alive while ignoring higher needs such as satisfaction or even the more intense areas of self awareness. This is survival mode. You're no longer worried about how dissatisfied you are with your accomplishments to date but instead how you'll get the next meal while not freezing to death. Life becomes simple. It is clarified down to the act of preventing death.
You can go for extended periods without food and this is why people find a way to survive in difficult circumstances by drinking water and wearing clothes to keep warm. Food is helpful but not essential right away as much as we have been conditioned to believe. This is why people can fast for days and sometimes longer without severe health concerns though it applies to healthy people and not diabetics or others with health problems.
Just be aware that your first concern beyond breathing is body temperature preservation and your focus will keep you alive long enough to find water and then food in that order or priority.

HK Pistols
HKP7 Remake
This is a work of art and so I thought I'd share the link for HK lovers.
HK P30 - I love this gun. It comes in many variations but the best part of it is the grip. Find a used one and you can get a world class work of perfection for not much more , $800 than a New Glock $550. You can get it with a safety that can go cocked and locked, or double action. Or you can get the version that doesn't have a safety and operates first shot double action and second shot single. You can always cock the hammer.
HK VP9 - This is the Glock competitor. If you like the HK grip and don't want to hammer and prefer a striker rent a VP9. It has a nice trigger reset and a nice trigger overall. It points better than a Glock.
HK USP 9 - Big Grip and too big if you have a small hand. Great if you prefer the single action method of function. The trigger is nice but you have to get used to the size of the grip.

Look - How appealing your home is for invasion often is the apparent value of goods to be found. Someone living in a rotted out trailer has less to offer a home invader than someone with new cars in the driveway of an immaculate and expensive home in a remote location.

You can still buy a cheap lot and throw a trailer on it and a satellite dish. In some places even an outhouse is still the mode of acceptable waste removal. Crime in WV is nowhere near the rest on the list and I do remember a study a decade or so ago where it had the lowest per capita expenditure on law enforcement while enjoying the second lowest violent crime rate in the country. Demographics and population density still mean something and both of these still favor the Mountaineer State. Census info.

Both Arkansas and West Virginia have low pension deficit ratios compared to some of the biggest offenders like Illinois where corruption rules. If you listened to the Democrat Leaders in the USA including BHO, HRC, and the minions that tried to blame the election, email hacks, and anything else they could on the Russians you'd think that there would be some proof. Sadly, they said and did all of this with nothing but suppositions and innuendo.Now we get to the threat. Our threat from Russia couldn't be worse than it was in the distant past during the Cold War. Thanks to major blunders and missteps by Democrat leaders we have repeatedly shown Russia that we consider them a lesser partner on the world stage and have disregarded their interests even when our own interests were better served by leaving things alone.

Back when Bill Clinton was President he made the decision to attack a Christian country that had historic allied ties to the Russians in order to serve the needs of Muslim inhabitants of Kosovo in Serbia. If you remember this they called them ethnic Albanians as in they were from Albania, a neighboring country. Despite strong protest from Russia we went ahead and started an air war against Serbia and Clinton succeeded in poisoning relations from Russia that had been seen as very good following the collapse of the Soviet Union. This was an unnecessary act of aggression against an ally of Russia for what we now know was a media hype story of genocide. The Real Fake News
It's funny how the far left, extreme left, Ultra Left, or shall we say the Alt Left controls the mainstream media commonly known as the MSM, or Government Controlled Media. And when we say government we mean the government party mostly dominated by the Democrat Party but also the Establishment of both parties.
Those selfsame news propagandists happily and eagerly put out a list of news sites that comprise in the mind of one leftist college professor thought didn't meet the objective news standard. Of course none of the propaganda news organizations were on the list, and none of the left wing Alt Left sites either.
So with an effort to balance the issue here is a link to a list of sites compiled by Ron Paul of news organizations that he views as putting out fake news. He blames many of these sources for the fake WMD stories used to get us into the Iraq war. Enjoy.

The most important thing you have in terms of preparation is your ability to see trends and know what might be headed your way. We might call it situational awareness on a macro scale. A recent example is the false narrative of a Hillary win as guaranteed by the MSM/Democrat Controlled Media. Had you been looking at alternative information sources such as Infowars, Breitbart, or simply using the services of the ultimate in discerning news aggregation, DrudgeReport.com, you'd have been much less sure that the fix was in for Hillary. I stayed in doubt right up until election night though I had friends who were sure that Trump would win based on obvious things like crowds at events and yard signs. They had good arguments but all along I thought that fraud would take the day, and it almost did.
At the time I had this feeling and spoke of it to others that the attempt to steal the election through fraud was getting an assist from the fake polls put out by the MSM. These were done so that if the Clinton machine was able to pull off a steal no one could argue it was against ongoing poll results. Unfortunately, even millions of illegals voting couldn't overcome the tidal wave of disaffected middle Americans that voted against the clear establishment candidate. Even the narrative that she won the popular vote is suspect since the illegals and dead voting aren't going to be ferreted out. Add to that the electronic voting fraud and ballot stuffing in Dem controlled areas such as Philly and Chicago are well known.
We dodged a big train wreck for the country and it seems like a reprieve from a guaranteed collapse into dictatorship and anarchy if the establishment had won. How things turn out are still in question but it is safe to say we are better off with the outsider shaking things up than what we were facing under the now defunct Clinton dynasty.
What to do:
Stay awake, pay attention, and look across many sources of news to get the full picture. The big area of concern is the attempt by the ultra left to destroy free information flow. Giving away the Internet was the long term move by that fetid bunch to remove it from American free speech protections. They clearly think that it is better to have dictatorships across the Oceans limiting who to publish online is safer to their cause than to risk Anti-establishment outsiders now recently elected who might allow a free and open exchange of information. Where this leads is still in doubt.
Get your news from the radio, online, and from print, and if you must then TV, but be warned that the TV news is nothing but propaganda if coming from the MSM. It is almost unwatchable to the discerning eye.

Travel Warning for Westerners: Why Go!

My number one question for any woman voluntarily going to a country where they risk prosecution for getting raped is what were you thinking, or didn't you know.
The multicultural disease infecting the minds of many Westerners and particularly women who vote to support multicultural madness drives the insanity of going to places that put you at great risk.
As a Christian male I have no further interest in going to Muslim countries. I have done so in the distant past when things weren't so dicey for a traveler that didn't share the cultural beliefs of the host country. Those days are long gone and you are well advised to use some common sense.
Travel Advice: Travel to countries that are friendly and safe. Better yet, travel to territories within your country. If you live in the USA you have a wide choice of variation in climate, culture, and cost and yet your safety is much stronger than going to a place where beheading can be a normal outcome.
My number one question for any woman voluntarily going to a country where they risk prosecution for getting raped is what were you thinking, or didn't you know.

.22 for Self Defense Update: 81 Year old man kills attacker

A little .22 did the job. Don't feel under-gunned if you can't handle anything else. It's better than a club or a kitchen knife. Actually, I'd have all three in the house ready for use. The nice thing about the .22 is that if it doesn't stop them you've made it known you are willing to resist. That is much better than submission. Just because it didn't stop them doesn't mean the fight is over. Sometimes they run and sometimes the fight has just begun.

Book Review: The Adventurer's Guide to the Outdoors
100 Essential Skills for Surviving in the Wild

This is a basic reference book for someone desiring to learn about outdoor survival if they can find it at the library or buy it used for a very low cost. However, it is not a book I'd add to my survival library simply because most of the information can be gleaned from online sources.
I checked on Amazon and you can find the book used for less than a dollar so for the additional 3.99 shipping you're up to about $5. For that price I could say it might be worth it for a reference book if you are working on your wilderness survival skills.
Still, I found much of the information generic and some things not accurate according to what I know here in the USA. For instance, it states that Lyme disease is deadly and to the best of my knowledge and of all the sources I've read about it I have never heard that. It can do lots of damage to you but death is not the biggest risk of Lyme as compared to many other tick borne diseases. Maybe they have a more extreme version of Lyme in Britain where I believe this book originated.
It is entertaining for browsing though even the artwork consists of B&W drawings.

ak74 vs ak47

I prefer the lighter weight, lower recoil, and greater accuracy and range of the 74. The previously available cheaper surplus ammo was such a great deal that it essentially meant you got the ak74 free ($350.), if you bought a crate of ammo, 2 tins.
Now the ammo price is up to the others since the surplus is no longer available, but the non-corrosive foreign manufacture versions are available online. I even spotted some at Wally World recently.

Book Review: The Reaper

This is a good book for a lot of reasons. It is good example of the mindset of a warrior. He was raised in a military family and everything he did throughout his life was preparation for the task he eventually mastered, an elite military sniper. You don't have to become a soldier to take notes and put some of the ideas to use in the defense of yourself and your family.
Some key points.
He was dispassionate about the targets. They were only real in the sense they were threats, but he stayed away from hatred and anger. Instead he focused on neutralizing the enemy in a methodical fashion.
He trained regularly and everything he did seemed to move toward improving his skills and knowledge as a fighter.
He didn't fall in love with equipment and instead focused on functional reliability and whatever improved mission outcomes.
Overall impression.
You'll learn about the challenges and risks that face our most precious citizens who take up arms for our country. These men sacrifice safety, comfort, and income to do this job and knowing how poorly they are often treated by our government during deployment and after they get home it should make angry. The efforts and what appears to be wasted efforts in many cases as we walk away from long fought wars in distant places and wasted lives of our own and the so called enemy it makes it clearer that these wars in the end come to no good.
What is impressive is the quality of the individuals that do the fighting. It should hold you in awe as your realize that these same men could have taken easy paths in life but chose to do this.
This is a great book, and especially as an audio book. I highly recommend it.

It's no accident this is happening in one of the states most invaded by untested illegals. The flood of humanity with a multitude of diseases is wrecking havoc across the country.
Philly lung disease affecting adults the victims are thin and well educated urban and wealthy. If this disease is a result of open borders then the likely culprit is housekeepers and nannies. These same women probably vote 95% for open borders. Aside for the selfish need for cheap labor they have conceivably gotten what they voted to get. It's hard to say yet since the media and government will blame every other cause before they can admit the truth that the diseases have been imported.

War With Russia - An end for the USA

The Democrat fools using Russia as a scapegoat for hacking and meddling with Russian Hegemony in their own sphere are toying with a Bear of immense claws, capability, and little reason to tolerate it.
This missile could do the job of taking out a 10th of the USA at a time, thus the word decimated. That is what we would be if they ever go toe to toe with us in a nuclear exchange and worse yet we have other enemies who might find joy in hitting us like the Chicoms, North Koreans, and of course the Iranians.
Unless you live in a Mountainous region in the Midwest you might be at risk and even there you could end up unlucky.
What to do: Enjoy what you have and every day of it. The fools in charge seem to have forgotten how close we came in the past to annihilation. Thank Bill Clinton for destroying our relationship with Russia that was on the mend after the Wall came down. We had an opening and he was busy with opening an intern and once caught attacked Serbia just to please the wife. We attacked Christians to protect Muslims. That worked out.

Ryobi 18v rechargeable batteries vs standard batteries for Survival
I'm a Home Depot Ryobi 18V One+ fan. I bought a set of tools years ago that came with Ni-cad batteries and later updated with some lithium batteries in the one+ category.
I used to buy more and more batteries in AA, AAA, D, C, and 9V to be ready to power up flashlights, radios, and other devices. Of course I still have some around but I really got tired of having to use the batteries or lose them since over time they will degrade. I found that using AA for electric toothbrushes at least gets me using that size battery. Also, a small radio made by Sony uses the same so I have tried to start sizing down my flashlights to work with AA size batteries as well. I'll just mention that there are so many options in that category that you can spend days just looking for the right flashlight. I just went through my D cell pile and found many of them are losing power and I simply can't use them enough based on the fact I now have my Ryobi lights that do a better job and can always be recharged.
Here is a Ryobi Shop Light. It is bright enough to light up a large room and if set on a table can be a work light. With a 20 hour plus run time on a battery this is great for emergencies and camping.

I have stopped adding to the old styles and have come to rely heavily on the Ryobi system for the simplicity and major capacity that comes with these batteries. You can also see the newer incandescent flashlight that works with these batteries. It seems as bright as a small spotlight.

This drill is powerful. Though not as versatile and easy to use as some others I find it functional.
Below are two types of flashlights. The original blue one is great for an incandescent. You can see the old style ni-cad battery underneath. Both have rotating heads for aiming and can sit flat for a work environment. I have put both to heavy and regular use. I keep one in the car and one on the nightstand. I have one more of the old style in a easy to find location on a shelf in the kitchen.
This portable vacuum has seen heavy use in cars, closets, work space, and on stairs. It has run well for years.
There are more tools that work with this system that you can find online at the Home Depot site or in the store. I have found the chain saw, weed trimmer, hedger, and leaf blower work well too. I just didn't get around to adding the photos of these. As you can see I'm fully on board with the Ryobi system and have had great success with the tools and batteries. I have picked up more of them knowing that I will put them to regular use.
