Getting experience is the best way to insure success down the road. In the case of survival down-the-road is when the SHTF. You don't want to do OJT, (on the job training), when your life depends on it. It is much better to have practical experience behind you to make sure that whatever you do is proven and tested.
The Urgency of Doing: Knowing is not enough

Getting experience is a good thing to focus on and here are a few examples.
Water Treatment - Don't have your water filtration system sitting in a box waiting for the day because if that day arrives and you haven't worked with it you may find that a part is missing or there is something critical missing in terms of actual function in whatever system you purchased. I have a neighbor that bought a gravity fed water filtration system and he keeps it in the box for years waiting for the disaster to strike. He has no real idea whether it will do the job since he hasn't tried it. Don't be that guy. I have a system that I don't need to use but it is part of my daily usage simply because I want to make sure I know and have the experience to back it up.
Self Defense - This is a big one because no one just all of a sudden becomes a weapons master. It takes training and practice of all kinds including reading and watching videos. Range time is essential and even with that some practical experience such as on a paintball field or some other simulated combat experience is essential. Don't just buy a firearms and think you'll master it on the day things fall apart or when the home invasion happens.
Handgun Training
Cooking Without Electricity - If you have a barbecue grill outside that runs on gas or charcoal you at least have a back-up plan that is relatively easy to guarantee will be available if the grid goes down. Try it sometime.
Food Storage - Don't just buy some freeze dried foods and figure your problems are solved. Try some of it even if it means buying single packs to try. Also, see if you can work canned foods into your diet along with some dried beans, rice, and wheat.
Food Production - Grow some now even if it's just tomato plants bought at the store. Grow now.
Practice Doing and it becomes experience.

As if we needed another type of infectious disease for ticks to bring us this one sounds scary as it probably has no way to cure or protect against it without a vaccine. Odds are there won't be a vaccine.
Suggestions: Take all the precautions you can against actually getting ticks on you. Check for ticks when you come back from going outside. Spray your yard, protect your pets, and use baiting for mice to stop the flow of ticks in your local environment since mice a big carriers. Deer are hard to stop so unless you want to put out deer treatment devices the best thing to do is to treat your lawn or keep it very low so ticks find it inhospitable.

In a multilevel single family home if you have a broken pipe it is a disaster.

Walther PK380: Other notable .380 guns include the Walther PK380. Having owned one I can tell you it shoots reliably and very softly due to its large size. It is very accurate but feels cheap in the hand and the reverse safety and hammer drop function is not something I want to get used to since it is dissimilar to most other guns that I own.
Colt Mustang: Nice gun but you might as well get a Sig. I don't like plastic triggers and reliability is iffy unless you put lots of work into it.

Wear Nitrile Gloves for this: Treat cotton with permethrin and put it in toilet paper tubes or paper towel tubes. Put those in areas where mice will use them for nesting and it will also cut the tick population drastically.
Clothing: Wear long pants and tuck them into your socks. Treat the clothes with deet to help repel ticks or permethrin to kill them.

Death of the American Dream - Living in your Car

Do you think this can't happen to you. I remember when this woman or one like her was interviewed on TV and I could hear the desperation in her words. She cried over the idea that her parents would have cried for her were they still alive.
Here is an article I just came across and it shows why fears about not being able to afford to live on your social security are real. In light of these outcomes an approach of going with an RV on your own land makes great sense for making sure you end up safe and not in a car. It seems that it can happen to anyone. I have watched story after story on this type of thing happening to middle class people that fell on hard times just by bad luck or mistakes that we all can make.
Creeping up on 80 and living in her car
Would you want this for you or one of your parents. It is a nightmare to which once you are in it the chance of getting out of it is bleak.
This poor woman is almost 80 and is living in a small car with her two dogs. What a wretched outcome and thank god my mom never faced this. I am thinking along the same lines of making sure I don't end up on the street some day. It can happen to anyone. Meanwhile, if you get here as a refugee or illegal you can get a check, a free home, free food, and free medical. It is insane.
Refugees are feted with free stuff and a home and they never did a day of work in the USA. What is wrong with this picture. Everything.
For Yourself: Avoiding this means being realistic. Living in a travel trailer, a mobile home, or even a tiny home/shed/cabin makes for a much more survivable financial picture than the big homes approach many people take. If you own land in a place where it is okay to park a travel trailer and live in it that is still a lot better than parking your car and sleeping in it for your old age plan. Find a place with an old trailer on it that might not be livable but has electric, septic, and well connections already in place and you might have a workable low cost plan to survive.
