I've owned one of these for years and have found them very reliable and useful.  The trick is using the correct ammo for it.  My experience has shown me that CCI mini mags and Remington Golden Bullets are the best functioning.  These are both high velocity hollow point rounds with a 36 grain bullet which must be ideally suited for the recoil spring.  The other trick is to make sure you keep the barrel and chamber clean and the rest of the upper well lubricated to avoid any friction that will impede the proper function.  There just isn't that much extra power to push past resistance beyond the norm like a 9mm might do.

9mm vs .22 for Survival

Forget the idea of just having one caliber for the purposes described.  I'd have a .22, a 9mm pistol or a .38 Special Revolver, a semi-automatic rifle, and a shotgun.  That's five different guns and only one that must require magazines if you choose a revolver for your handgun, and a .22 tube fed rifle, and thus leaving your only need for magazines will be your semi-auto rifle.
