Is this a surprise when you pick a far left promoter of an endless run of social causes not related to Church business who over time seems to not align with many of the main tenets of church doctrine.  This is the same as when they put the ONE - O in charge of a country that derived its greatness from freedom, free enterprise, and a Christian heritage none of which he supported but rather undermined.

This is just part of the long journey to decline that seems to be the fate of many denominations of Christianity thanks to many things but not helped by pretenders.
