One thing I noticed in the article was that "they did everything they were supposed to do."  Well, not really unless you count on the advice of people who believe you can talk a wild animal out of attacking you or maybe scare it.  That can work, but it often doesn't as in this case.  By the way, the cougar did what it was supposed to do since it is a wild animal looking for food.  Let that sink in.

The humans weren't  armed with anything but a bicycle and their persuasive skills.  Had one or both of them had a firearm even as small as a .22 pistol they might have had an even chance or better.  The sound of a handgun firing might have done it and punching holes into an aggressive animal often does the trick.   Even pepper spray might have been of some use, and a long knife would have worked wonders if it's all you have versus your weak human frame to defend yourself and your friend.

What does this teach us?  First, it teaches us that the media is clueless and doesn't consider the reality of self defense and protection.  Second, it teaches us that the government advised methods for protecting yourself is based on political considerations rather than truth.  Finally, it teaches us that you are responsible for your own safety so ignore what others tell you unless it survives reality testing.
