I enjoyed seeing comments from leftist Warmist types that still prattle on about climate change and global warming as something we must act on.  It really carries no strength in their argument when the temperatures are breaking records for cold in much of the USA.  In fact, talk of another mini-ice-age are beginning again, and complaints from the left are that yeah well, but when that happens and is over we'll be back to warming again.  Whatever!

So for us rational types here is my suggestion for handling the brittle cold especially if you're in an older home with insulation issues, you have trouble keeping the place warm, and if you're worried about massive energy bills.  Never mind what you'll do if the power goes away.

First.  think insulation and triage.  If you have rooms at the end of the house or mobile home that don't have plumbing and can let the temps get much lower there just close them up and consider those rooms another massive wall space of insulation.  On the doors leading to those rooms you can tape on radiant barrier.  You can also use radiant barrier to put behind furniture or even cover walls if you don't care about the look.  In a utility room this is usually no problem.  I use Reflectix for that.

Radiant Guard looks useful as well though it is designed for attics and crawl spaces.  Reflectix doesn't breathe so keep that in mind.  I've used it for decades to keep cabins warm in super cold winters.  Unlike fiberglass you don't have the issues with rodents making nests in it and risk of glass particles in the air or in your eyes.

As for heat sources.  Start with your main heat sources and add backups such as oil lamps, kerosene heaters, and propane portable heaters.  If you want to go all out add a wood stove, pellet stove, or propane space heater as back-ups when the power is out.

This is such a common story that it doesn't rate reporting it here other than as a reminder to choose your dogs carefully.  I know some people love pit-bulls, dobermans, Rottweilers, and German Shepherds. I have had some experience with each breed.  In the end, the only one of this group I would even consider is the German Shepherd, but even there the risk exists that you might end up dealing with an unprovoked attack.   This risk includes all animals that can't reason and often react by instinct.  Is it worth the risk.

I'm not a dog expert so take this as an opinion based on personal experience, observation, and common sense.

Here is a rule I have adopted for living with dogs.  I choose a dog for temperament.  A good dog for the home is one that can alert you to threats and is a safe companion, and not one that can physically overcome the owner.   Picking a dog that can defend you in a fight also means it can do the same to you when startled.   Another good way to get a good dog is to just find a mutt at a shelter.  You'll know early on its nature.  Find one no matter how small that you like to have around and shows at least some ability to inform you when something is happening.  Their hearing and sense of smell give you the edge when it comes to situational awareness at your retreat.

In a world of digital sound many audio fans are heading back to vinyl and cassettes.  The reasons are many and one is just the idea that these formats are time tested unlike almost all digital methods that have been superseded ever five or so years, think floppies, mini floppies, zip drives, Bernoulli drives, and of course the ever changing operating system non interchangeability.

I still keep many cassette tapes around from the 70's and 80's though I will admit that I no longer have any 8 tracks.  :)


Hang onto your cassette tapes as they come in handy for many things including revisiting long lost recordings that you can always re-record onto some digital format by audio methods.  Now I'm waiting for VHS tapes to come back.  Probably not.  But I still have about four players and a hundred cassettes.  You never know.

Why is this relevant to survival?

Because often what is old is more tested and can be relied upon as a fallback just like revolvers are still around many years later than they were thought outmoded.  They still work very well.

Winter Preps

This is a good list of ideas and preparations.

Here are a few of my own that I follow.

Replace LED lights in the house with 60w incandescent bulbs for heat generation.  These are safe mini heaters when put in a normal mounted receptacle designed for them and will help keep rooms above freezing.  Light and security is the secondary benefit.

Place radiant barrier between walls and furniture that is against a wall.  This helps raise the insulation value of the walls and keeps in radiant heat.

Check your oil lamps and portable propane heaters for back-ups.

Bring out the flannel shirts and pajamas.  You can wear these as long johns and stay comfortable at lower temperatures inside and outside the home.

What is better paper or data?

This is a great article on the upsides and downsides of paper and digital storage.  Bottom line is to have redundant backups in every format or at least in two.

External physical hard drives:

I have multiple external hard drives that I update once a week or so and keep them in physically separate locations so even a home fire won't take them all out.  You can keep one in a shed or a parked car rather than with the computer you are trying to backup.  You can even keep one at the office, and I also have a table top external next to the computer that I don't keep plugged into it but allow for the weekly backup so that in the event of a crashed hard drive on the computer I don't lose the whole thing.

Cloud Storage:

Add in some online backup capability like Google Drive, Dropbox, and actual cloud backup services and you should have it covered.

Whatever you do, don't just rely on one method and especially one that is purely cloud based no matter how reliable it has been for you in the past.

Scanning your documents:

 

Do it regularly when you receive them and add them to a folder such as a  yearly one.  For example 2017.  You can always create subfolders but the best way is to title your documents very well so that the search capability for files can do the job of organization for you.  I have found that just having files broken down into yearly increments makes it much easier to guess where the file is held.

Another method you can also add is to do a DVD data file backup that you can use to store things like photos and personal videos in such a quantity that you might have a full copy of every family photo that exists.  If these are all sharable with family members you can add redundancy by sending copies to all siblings so that in a worst case scenario you could retrieve a copy from them to make yourself one in the event of a home fire or other catastrophe.

I have also found that even a 16gb key chain USB device holds all my family records so that I keep a copy on my key chain that is encrypted.

Paper:

 

Sure paper is a good format for some backups such as your personally written poetry or novel, but keep in mind this format is not easily made digital again where it can be edited.  Instead, have an emergency bookshelf copy for yourself say if you want to read your poetry after an EMP attack that makes all other means of finding your precious work impossible.  You can then read your artistic handiwork while nibbling on a can of cold beans or sardines as you contemplate how life used to be before you revisited the 19th century.  Oh, and have lots of oils lamps and lamp oil for this if it comes to it.

 Audio and Video:

If what you have to worry about is video or audio I'd keep CD and DVD backups as well.  Even video of items you own not only comes in handy for insurance purposes but it might serve to fill the gap of ownership if you sell it or lose it somehow. 

Final Thoughts

If you don't do backups expect pain at some point in your digital life.  Even if you're primarily a paper storage person it makes perfect sense to secure a digital copy as your backup in the event of a physical catastrophe such as fire, flood, theft, or just plain old loss by accident.

This is a good instruction on making your own.  I learned it as a kid but of course haven't found the need or desire to make it since then.  The idea that you can hold the precursor components and make it as needed seems nice, but in truth I'd rather store reloading components and develop that skill.

Saving Money on Prepping Gear
Buy second hand or re-purpose items such as clothing.  Buy at online auction sites, gun shows, flea markets, and dollar type stores for simple items like chemical light sticks.  You can often find these things for one third the price at a discount location.

Were this situation not so serious it would be funny to hear Sen Warner call Trump naive on the North Korea problem except that the Democrats caused this problem.  They are the ultimate head in the sand gutless fools that gave technology and food to the Norks in the 1990s and then the ONE, Obama proceeded to do nothing or less than nothing during the 8 years of his planned demotion of the USA as he bowed and kissed the rings of Islamic dictators around the world.

The left can't even grasp that when Trump says we'll handle it that it is his way of saying we're working on it.  No one thinks this is an easy thing to fix except leftists who want to give in to the NORKS once again.

What to do:  Don't live where the NORKS might hit you.  I'd say that the West coast cities are a cinch for an eventual hit from somebody in Asia and DC and New York are a given.  Beyond that, just live your life and hope for the best.

And thanks to Presidents Clinton and Obama who both cancelled missile defense efforts any Americans that perish as a result of a nuke attack will be from their ignorance on the laws of national defense.  How is missile defense a threat?  We wish we had it now, and not some theater or regional capability that relies on kinetic defense rather than energy weapons as envisioned in the past.  By now without interference from the two dunces we might be ready to stop anything.

What to do:  Nothing.  Unless you live out in Podunk and far from any worthwhile target you really have no way to protect yourself from a nuke but only the nuke fallout should be your concern.  There you can go with the shelter if you want but again it may just be a wasted effort.

One thing you can probably count on and that is a nuke war is coming.

Solution:  Enjoy life.  It can be short.
